Getting Personal

According to a new book on the subject of personal ads entitled "Classified: The Secret History of the Personal Column," personal ads date back at least 300 years. Back in the day, "lonely hearts" went to matrimonial agencies to hire someone to find them a spouse. Presently, online dating is practically the norm. But personal ads have had a very colorful history and seen many different incarnations.

From clandestine and creepy to outspoken and honest, the placing of personal ads (or, now, online dating profiles) has become trendy, hip, and fashionable. "Everybody's doing it."

→ Whether you've dated online or not, how do you really feel deep down about this method of matchmaking? Are you wary of its nature, or are you thankful for the ease of the Internet?

It's totally creepy to me. I tried it once for like 30 seconds and just couldn't handle the fear. My picture out there, who knows who's on the other end of the screen. But I guess that was about 10 years ago. Different times these days.

I tried the personals in the 90s. Your ad would appear in the newspaper, then people would call a number if interested. One guy turned out to be dangerous. I had to change my phone number.

I think on-line dating has become more respectable, less fringe than the personals columns from those weekly free newspapers. I've tried it a few times, I thought I might meet some solid men this way. I think there is an ART and a SCIENCE to successful on-line dating. And some luck. My results were not great. I admit this form of dating pulls out all of my insecurities, whereas in real life I feel much more self-assured and desirable when dating.
